26 May 2022
Other Highlights

The topic "Environment, Energy and Territory" is now more complete and structured, providing more than 80 statistical tables for the 27 countries of the European Union, organised into seven main areas:

• Water and Sanitation: Includes data on bathing water quality and wastewater treatment.

• Climate and Air Quality: Includes data on air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

• Waste and Circular Economy: Includes various indicators on the production and treatment of waste, also covering recycling and waste reused in the economy.

• Territory, Biodiversity and Environmental Protection: Includes data on the Natura 2000 Network, forested areas, fires, organic farming and soil degradation.

• Energy: Includes various indicators relating to energy production and consumption, electricity and natural gas prices and the contribution of renewable energies;

• Energy Economics: Includes indicators on energy consumption and emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases that cause global warming according to the wealth produced by countries. These indicators make it possible to assess whether the increase in countries' wealth has had a greater or lesser impact on the environment.

• Environmental Taxes: Includes data on environmental taxes and their weight in countries' tax revenues.

These seven areas are monitored using dozens of tables that enable us to follow the path taken by Portugal and the other countries of the European Union regarding environmental issues.

The topic “Environment, Energy and Territory” also includes indicators that enable the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to be monitored over recent decades and in the next ten years. Among others, the following goals are included:

Goal 6 – Clean water and sanitation

Goal 7 – Affordable and clean energy

Goal 13 –Climate action

Goal 14 – Life below water

Goal 15 – Life on land

The statistical data from which the tables are constructed comes from Eurostat and is always accompanied by the descriptions and concepts necessary for its correct interpretation.
